NexGard (Afoxolaner) is used to prevent and treat flea and tick infestation in dogs. It is also used to prevent infectious diseases transmitted by ticks, such as Lyme disease (Borrelia burgdorferi). Its active ingredient, afoxolaner, belongs to the isoxazoline class of parasiticides. It works by selectively inhibiting GABA-gated chloride channels in the nervous system of parasites, causing uncontrolled nerve activity, paralysis, and death.
