Vocabria Information:

Vocabria (Cabotegravir) is used with another HIV medication (rilpivirine) for a short-term treatment to replace other medication(s) used to help control HIV infection. Cabotegravir is also used by itself for short-term treatment to help prevent HIV infection in people who have a high risk for infection. Short-term treatment (usually for 1 month) is used to see how well you can take this medication before using the long-acting form. Cabotegravir belongs to a class of drugs known as integrase inhibitors. It blocks the virus from growing and infecting more cells. Vocabria is not a cure for HIV infection. This medication helps to decrease the amount of HIV in your body so your immune system can work better. It lowers your chance of getting HIV complications (such as new infections, and cancer) and improves your quality of life.

Vocabria Side Effects:

When your immune system gets stronger, it can begin to fight off infections you already had, possibly causing disease symptoms to come back. You could also have symptoms if your immune system becomes overactive. This reaction may happen at any time (soon after starting HIV treatment or many months later). Get medical help right away if you have any serious symptoms, including unexplained weight loss, severe tiredness, muscle aches/weakness, severe headaches, joint pain, numbness, vision changes, signs of infection (such as fever, chills, swollen lymph nodes, trouble breathing, cough, non-healing skin sores), signs of an overactive thyroid (such as irritability, nervousness, heat intolerance, bulging eyes, an unusual growth in the neck/thyroid known as a goitre), signs of a certain nerve problem known as Guillain-Barre syndrome (such as unsteadiness, loss of coordination, trouble moving your eyes), signs of liver disease (such as nausea/vomiting that does not stop, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, yellowing eyes/skin, dark urine).

Tell your doctor immediately if you have any serious side effects, including mental/mood changes (such as depression, and thoughts of suicide). Changes in body fat may occur while you are taking this medication (such as increased fat in the upper back and stomach areas, and decreased fat in the arms and legs). The cause and long-term effects of these changes are unknown. A very serious allergic reaction is rare. However, get medical help right away if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including rash, itching, severe dizziness, and trouble breathing. If you notice any other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Vocabria Directions:

Vocabria tablet is usually given once per day starting at least 28 days before you switch to the injectable combination. Take Vocabria tablet with a meal. If you take the medicines at separate times, Vocabria may be taken with or without food. Use Vocabria tablets exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets. On the last day you take Vocabria, you will receive your first injectable dose. If you miss or plan to miss an injection by more than 7 days, call your healthcare provider to discuss your treatment options. You must remain under the care of a doctor while using Vocabria. Stay on schedule to get the most benefit. Missing doses can increase your risk of HIV that is resistant to medication. Do not take more or less of this drug than prescribed or stop taking it (or other HIV medicines) even for a short time unless directed to do so by your doctor. Doing so may cause the amount of virus to increase, make the infection more difficult to treat (resistant), or worsen side effects. If you stop using Vocabria, you will need to start using other HIV medicines to prevent your condition from becoming resistant. Call your healthcare provider right away to discuss your treatment options. Vocabria can have long-lasting effects on your body (up to 12 months after your last dose). You may still need medical tests for a short time after you stop using this medicine.

Vocabria Precautions:

Inform your doctor or pharmacist about your condition or medical history. If you have:
• Mental or mood disorders (such as depression);
• Liver disease (such as hepatitis B, and hepatitis C);
• Pregnancy. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. It is not known whether cabotegravir will harm an unborn baby. However, HIV can be passed to your baby if the virus is not controlled during pregnancy.

It may make you dizzy. Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs alertness until you can do it safely. Limit alcoholic beverages. Talk to your doctor if you have any effect that refuses to go. Use an effective barrier method (latex or polyurethane condoms/dental dams) during sexual activity as directed by your doctor. Do not share personal items such as needles that may have contacted blood or other body fluids. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for more details. Women with HIV or AIDS should not breastfeed a baby. Even if your baby is born without HIV, the virus may be passed to the baby in your breast milk. Vocabria is not approved for use by anyone younger than 12 years old or weighing less than 77 pounds (35 kilograms).
