Motegrity (Prucalopride Succinate) is a medication used to treat chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC). Motegrity works by binding with specific receptors in the colon, specifically 5-HT receptors. By activating these receptors, the colon releases acetylcholine. An increase of acetylcholine increases something called colonic peristalsis, which is the reflexive contraction and release of the colon muscles. This reflexive contraction allows for an increase of bowel mobility, and decreases constipation. This medication is typically used when other medications have been ineffective. The symptoms of CIC include constipation or difficulty passing stools, hard or lumpy stools, straining while defecation, abdominal pain, abdominal discomfort and bloating, and excessive flatulence.
