Evalon (Estriol) is a steroid, a weak estrogen, and a minor female sex hormone. It used as a cream for the treatment of vulvovaginal problems arising as a result of diminished estrogen production after menopause (usually around the age of 50). It is also used as tablet for the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis, hormone replacement therapy (HRT), hypersensitivity, undiagnosed vaginal bleeding, porphyria, difficult or painful sexual intercourse and symptoms of vaginal atrophy in postmenopausal women and in women whose ovaries have been removed. Vaginal atrophy is a condition that occurs due to a decline in female hormones and leads to thinning, drying and inflammation of the vaginal walls. It also promotes wound healing before or after vaginal surgery. Evalon works by replacing or replenishing the hormone estrogen that is normally produced in the body. The medication is taken by mouth in the form of tablets, as a cream that is applied to the skin, or applied to the vagina.

Evalon Side Effects:

Estriol is well-tolerated and produces relatively few adverse effects. Breast tenderness may sometimes occur as a side effect of estriol. Local reactions with vaginal estriol such as discomfort (irritation, burning, itching) and discharge may occur.

Estriol may produce endometrial hyperplasia similarly to estradiol and other estrogens, and hence should be combined with a progestogen in women with intact uteruses to prevent this risk. However, it appears that typical clinical dosages of vaginal estriol are not associated with an important risk of endometrial proliferation or hyperplasia. As such, combination with a progestogen may not be needed in the case of vaginal estriol.

Other side effects may include headache, skin rash, pain in breasts, increased vaginal discharge, stinging or redness of the genital area. Thick, white vaginal discharge without odor or with a mild odor may be seen too.

Inform your doctor about allergic reactions: rash, blisters, hives, itching, swelling of the eyes, face, tongue, throat, hands, arms, feet, ankles or lower legs, hoarseness, difficulty in breathing or swallowing.

Evalon Directions:

Apply this medicine to the affected area as instructed by the doctor. Follow all the usage instructions mentioned on the label or the package insert. EEvalon Cream comes with an applicator that is to be used for the application. Apply the cream to the vagina. It is best to apply this before going to bed. If you have missed the application of Evalon cream, apply it as soon as possible. Do not over-apply the cream to compensate for the missed application.

The dosage of Evalon 2mg/1mg tablet depends on many factors such as the patient age, health, medical condition or history of the patient and many other conditions. The medicine is to be swallowed with water. It can be taken with or without food, but remember to take it at a fixed time each day for better results. Evalon Precautions:

Inform your doctor if you have a known allergy to estriol, any estrogen products or any other ingredient present along with the formulation. Tell your doctor about your medical conditions and if you have:
• Breast or endometrial cancer;
• High blood pressure;
• High blood sugar;
• High cholesterol (fats in the blood);
• Migraine headaches;
• Overweight. You may have a higher risk for getting heart disease;
• Uterine fibroid or;
• Use of tobacco.

Do not use if you have an increased risk of getting estrogen-sensitive cancer (family history of breast cancer). Although the chance is low, use may increase your chance of getting cancer of the ovary or uterus (womb). Regular visits to your health professional can help identify these serious side effects early. Vaginal creams will melt and leak out of the vagina. A mini pad or sanitary napkin will protect your clothing. Do not use tampons (like those used for menstrual periods) since they may soak up the medicine and make the medicine less effective. Avoid use in disease of the immune system that affects many organs of the body systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).
