Pico-Salax Information:

Pico-Salax (generic name-Citric Acid/Magnesium Oxide/Sodium Picosulfate) is used to wash out the intestines in preparation for bowel surgery. It is also used in preparation for procedures such as colonoscopy, barium enema X-ray exam, or any other procedure that requires the washout of the intestines. Pico-Salax belongs to the class of medications called Laxatives. It contains three active ingredients (citric acid, magnesium oxide, and sodium picosulfate), whose combined action on the intestines produces watery bowel movements or diarrhea. Sodium picosulfate acts as a stimulant laxative, which stimulates the intestines to contract, causing movement of the bowel contents. Citric acid and magnesium oxide work together to act as osmotic laxatives by drawing copious amounts of water from the wall of the intestines.

The more serious side effects of this medication include the following:
• Allergic reaction symptoms such as rash, itching, swelling of the face, tongue, or throat, difficulty in breathing, wheezing;

• Kidney problems such as a decrease in the amount of urine;
• Rectal or anal bleeding;
• Severe abdominal pain that refuses to go away;
• Symptoms of severe dehydration such as confusion, dizziness, fainting, fast or irregular heartbeats, abnormal awareness of heartbeats, and seizures.

Pico-Salax Directions:

The right dose for each individual may vary depending on the age, medical condition, and the intended procedure this medication is used to prepare for. Therefore, following your doctor's instructions regarding this medication's use is highly important. Generally, the recommended dose for adults is one sachet, two times, 6-8 hrs apart the day before the procedure. For children between 1-6 years, the usual dose is a quarter of one sachet in the morning and afternoon on the day before the procedure. The usual dose for children 6 to 12 years is half of a sachet in the morning and afternoon the day before the procedure.

Pour one dose of Pico-Salax into 150 milliliters (5 ounces) of water and mix until it dissolves in the water. Very rarely, the resulting mixture may heat up after mixing with water. If that occurs, let it cool before you drink it. Make sure you drink all of the mixtures. Please consult your doctor to know the exact hour to start the dose, as it usually depends on the time of your procedure.

Drink at least 250 milliliters (8 ounces) of clear fluids (not water only) or every 1 hour after each dose. Clear fluids you can take include white cranberry or lemonade juice, clear fruit juice, sprite, coconut water, or clear broth. This is important to replenish lost fluids from diarrhea and prevent fluid and electrolyte imbalance. Do not drink milk, other dairy products, red/dark-colored liquids, or alcohol before the procedure. Do not take medications 2 hours before or 6 hours after taking Pico-Salax. Carefully read the instructions on the pack for more information on how to use this drug. Ensure you have access to the toilet until the effects of this medication wear off. Store this medication at room temperature, i.e., below 30⁰C, and keep it away from light, moisture, and out of reach of children. Do not flush down the sink or toilet. Ensure proper disposal of the leftover.
