Mirapex ER (Pramipexole) is used to treat symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, such as stiffness, tremors, muscle spams, and poor muscle control. Mirapex ER is also used to treat restless legs syndrome (RLS). Mirapex ER works by increasing the levels of dopamine, a chemical which occurs naturally in your body. It is classified as a dopamine agonist, and increases the level of dopamine by stimulating dopamine receptors in the brain. Low levels of dopamine in the brain are greatly associated with hyperkinetic disorders, so by increasing the levels of dopamine, the symptoms can lessen. Mirapex ER is not a cure for Parkinson’s disease or RLS, but it may lessen symptoms. Common symptoms of Parkinson’s disease include tremors, slowed movement, rigid or stiff muscles, impaired posture and balance, loss of automatic movements, speech changes, and changes in writing.

Mirapex ER Side Effects:

Common side effects of Mirapex ER include, muscle weakness, drowsiness, or dizziness, confusion or memory problems, dry mouth, nausea or constipation, increased urination, sleep problems, or unusual dreams. Contact your doctor immediately if you notice more serious side effects such as light-headedness, hallucinations, severe drowsiness, increase in uncontrolled movements, unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness, vision problems, or posture changes you cannot control. You may also have increased sexual urges, urges to gamble, and other intense urges. Tell your doctor if you have any increased or intense urges.

Mirapex ER Directions:

For Parkinson’s disease, the recommended starting dose is 0.375 mg once daily, with or without food. For Restless Legs Syndrome, the recommended starting dose is 0.125 mg. The dose and timing of Mirapex differs depending on if you are taking it for RLS or Parkinson’s disease, so be sure to follow the instructions of your doctor exactly. Do not crush, chew, or dissolve the tablet. It must be swallowed whole, as the medication needs to be absorbed at a specific rate. Do not stop using this medication suddenly, as you could have unpleasant withdrawal symptoms. Talk to your doctor if you would like to stop taking this medication.

Mirapex ER Precautions:

You should not use Mirapex ER if you are allergic to pramipexole. To make sure Mirapex ER is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have ever had low blood pressure, dizziness after getting up too fast, daytime drowsiness, kidney disease, or if you are pregnant. You also should not take this medication if you are breastfeeding, as the medication can pass into breast milk. Do not drink alcohol. Dangerous side effects can occur when alcohol is combined with Mirapex ER. Mirapex ER can cause severe drowsiness. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery until you know how this medication can affect you, as your reactions may be impaired. Avoid getting up too fast from a sitting or lying position, as you may feel dizzy.
