Treximet (Sumatriptan/Naproxen) is a medication used to treat migraine headaches. It contains a combination of sumatriptan and naproxen. Sumatriptan is a migraine headache medication that works by stimulating serotonin receptors in the brain, which causes the muscles surrounding the blood vessels in the brain to contract and narrow the blood vessels which can reduce pain. Naproxen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) and works by blocking the effects of chemicals in your body called cyclo-oxygenase enzymes. These enzymes make other chemicals called prostaglandins, which are responsible for pain and inflammation. By blocking the enzymes, it reduces production of prostaglandins, which in turn reduces pain and inflammation. This medication will only treat a migraine headache that has begun. It will not prevent headaches or reduce the number of attacks. Symptoms of migraine headaches include pain on one side of your head, and sometimes on both sides, pain that throbs or pulsates, sensitivity to light and sound, and nausea and vomiting. Treximet Side Effects:

Common side effects of Treximet include dizziness, drowsiness, irregular heartbeats, numbness or tingling in your fingers or toes, dry mouth, heartburn, nausea, or tight muscles.

Stop using Treximet and contact your doctor if you notice more serious side effects such as:

- Severe numbness, tingling, or discolouration in your fingers and toes;
- Leg cramps, burning, coldness, or heavy feeling in your feet or legs;
- Severe headache, blurred vision, pounding in your neck or ears;
- Signs of heart problems (swelling, rapid weight gain, shortness of breath);
- Signs of high levels of serotonin (agitation, hallucinations, fever, sweating, fast heart rate, muscle stiffness, twitching, lack of coordination);
- Signs of kidney problems (little or no urination, swelling in your feet or ankles, drowsiness, shortness of breath);
- Signs of liver problems (loss of appetite, stomach pain (upper right side), drowsiness, dark urine, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes), clay-coloured stools);
- Signs of anemia (pale skin, drowsiness, light-headedness, shortness of breath);

Treximet Directions:

Take this medication as prescribed by your doctor. Use the lowest dose that is effective in treating your condition, as overuse of migraine medication can actually make headaches worse. Take 1 tablet as soon as you notice headache symptoms, or after an attack has already begun. This medication can be taken with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole. Do not crush, chew, or break it. If the headache does not go away, contact your doctor before taking a second tablet. Wait two hours before taking a second tablet. Do not take more than 2 tablets within 24 hours. Store this medication at room temperature in a dry place. Keep out of sight and reach of children.

Treximet Precautions:

You should not use Treximet if you are allergic to naproxen or sumatriptan, or if you have heart problems, a history of heart attack or stroke, heart rhythm disorders, blood circulation problems, or severe liver disease. To make sure Treximet is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have ever had heart problems, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, asthma, epilepsy, liver or kidney disease, or if you smoke. Taking Treximet during the last 3 months of pregnancy may harm the unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. You should not breastfeed while using this medication. Treximet is not approved for use by anyone younger than 12 years old. Avoid drinking alcohol, and taking aspirin or other salicylates. Avoid driving until you know how this medication will affect you, as your reactions could be impaired. Tell your doctor about any medications you are taking, especially heart medication and antidepressants, in order to reduce the risk of any possible interactions.
