Acuvail Information:
Acuvail (generic name: Ketorolac) is a drug prescribed to treat the symptoms that a patient may experience after surgery to remove cataracts. These symptoms can include swelling, pain, burning and stinging in the eyes. The active ingredient in Acuvail is a drug called ketorolac, which belongs to the group of drugs called nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Ketorolac works by blocking the action of a substance in the body called cyclo-oxygenase (COX). Cyclo-oxygenase is involved in producing prostaglandins, in response to injury such as surgery. These prostaglandins cause pain, swelling and inflammation. Ketorolac blocks the production of these prostaglandins and so is effective at relieving pain and inflammation. Ketorolac cannot be used for longer than 5 days at a time as it is a very strong drug for reducing pain.
Acuvail Side Effects:
As with any drug, there may be side effects from taking Acuvail, including mild burning, stinging, itchy eyes, swollen or puffy eyelids and headaches. More serious side effects may include severe burning or stinging in the eyes, eye pain, redness of the eyes, watery eyes, vision changes, increased sensitivity to light, white patches on your eyes and crusting or drainage of the eyes. If you experience any side effects you must seek medical attention immediately for safety.
Acuvail Directions:
You should follow the instructions of the doctor who prescribed Acuvail to you. Directions and dosage information can also be found on the pack or leaflet inside the pack. Acuvail comes in eye drop form, and to use you must tilt your head back and use the dropper to release the prescribed number of drops into the eye (or both eyes if you have had surgery on both). You should store Acuvail at room temperature away from direct sunlight and heat.
Acuvail Precautions:
If you are allergic to any of the ingredients of Acuvail, you should avoid taking it and inform your doctor. You must consult your doctor if you have any pre-existing medical conditions including any bleeding or blood clotting disorder, diabetes, arthritis, glaucoma or dry eye syndrome. You must consult your doctor if you are taking any other medications as they may interact with Acuvail, including any other eye medications. It is important that you inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to conceive or breastfeeding as Acuvail may cause harm to unborn and new born babies.
