Alrex Information:
Alrex (Loteprednol Etabonate) is an ophthalmic steroid medication used to treat eye inflammation caused by allergies, shingles, severe acne, iritis, and several other conditions. The gel form of Alrex is used to treat pain and swelling after eye surgery. Alrex works by activating lipocortins, which are proteins that inhibit mediators of inflammation such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes. In doing this, the prostaglandins and leukotrienes cannot release arachidonic acid, which causes inflammation. This reduces many inflammation related symptoms. Symptoms of eye inflammation include redness, itching, burning, feeling like there is something in your eye, watery eyes, and swelling. Your doctor will decide on the best treatment for your condition.

Alrex Directions:
Follow your doctor’s directions carefully. Do not use this medication while wearing soft contact lenses, as a preservative in Alrex can permanently stain the lenses. Use this medication at least 15 minutes before using your contacts. Wash your hands before using the eye medication. Shake the eye drops well before use. If using the gel, turn the bottle upside down and shake once to fill the dropper tip with gel. Tilt your head back slightly and pull down your lower eyelid to create a small pocket. Hold the dropper above the eye and squeeze a drop into this pocket, then close your eyes for 1 or 2 minutes. Use only the number of drops your doctor has prescribed. Do not touch the tip of the eye dropper or place it directly on your eye, as a contaminated dropper can infect your eye and lead to serious vision problems. This medication is for short term use. Call your doctor if your symptoms do not improve after 2 days of treatment. Store this medication in an upright position at room temperature, out of sight and reach of children. Do not freeze this medication.
