Amitiza Information:

Amitiza (Lubiprostone) is a prescription medication used to treat chronic constipation or constipation caused by pain medications. It may also be used to treat irritable bowel syndrome in women with constipation as the main symptom. Lubiprostone is a drug that belongs to the class known as chloride channel activators. It increases the amount of fluid within your intestines, which softens and makes it easier to pass stool. It is also known to improve symptoms such as bloating and abdominal discomfort, improve stool texture, lessen the need to strain and decrease the feeling of not completely relieving oneself.

Amitiza Side Effects:

Many people using Amitiza do not have serious side effects. However, the common side effects experienced include nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, dry mouth, runny nose, cough, fever, headache, joint pain, or trouble sleeping. If any of these effects last or get worse, talk to your doctor or pharmacist. There may be serious allergic reactions with Amitiza as well although rare. Get medical help right away if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction such as rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, diarrhea, pain or swelling in your belly, vomiting and headache.

Lubiprostone may rarely cause trouble breathing and chest tightness within 30 to 60 minutes after the first dose. This is usually not serious and generally goes away within 3 hours. It may occur again with other doses. However, you may not know the difference between this reaction and a rare severe reaction that also causes trouble breathing and chest pain. Get medical help immediately if you develop any.

Note that this is not a complete list of possible side effects. If you notice other effects not listed above, speak with your doctor or pharmacist.

Amitiza Directions:

Amitiza comes as a capsule you take by mouth. It is available in 24 mcg. The maximum recommended dosage is 48 mcg per day. The adult dosage for chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC) and opioid-induced constipation (OIC) is 24 mcg twice daily. Do not take more than what is instructed by your doctor. If you have liver damage, your doctor may prescribe a reduced dosage of 16 mcg twice daily or 8 mcg twice daily. For irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C), the dosage is 8 mcg twice daily. If you have severe liver damage, your doctor may prescribe 8 mcg once daily. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. But if it is almost time for your next dose, do not use the missed dose but go back to your normal time. Do not take extra medicine to make up for the missed dose. Take this medication by mouth with food and water, and swallow the medication whole. Do not break or chew the medication. Drink at least 6 to 8 glasses (8 ounces each) of liquid each day. This will help make the stool softer. The dosage may vary and is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. Therefore, make sure to take the dosage your doctor prescribes for you. Your doctor will determine the best dosage to suit your needs. Take this medicine exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more of it, do not take it more often, and do not take it for a longer time than your doctor ordered. It may increase the chance of side effects.
