Renal patients need to be careful of which multivitamins they take, this is why someone invented Replavite: see below: Careful With Regular Vitamins! Regular multi-vitamin supplements from the store are not good for you when you have kidney disease. Regular multi-vitamins may not have enough of the vitamins you need and too much of the vitamins A, C, D, E and K that could cause problems in your body. Why Are Your Vitamin Needs Different When You Have Kidney Disease? Because of Your Diet - Your special diet may limit how many dairy products, vegetables, or fruits you eat. You may also have a poor appetite or are tired and don't feel like making meals, which decreases your food intake. Because of Kidney Disease - Your kidneys can no longer clean out all of the toxins from your blood. The toxins in your blood may prevent the vitamins from helping your body be healthy. Because of the Medicines You Take - Some medicines you need to take may stop vitamins from being used by your body and you may need more of some vitamins so your body will be getting enough. Because of Dialysis - The water-soluble B vitamins are all removed during dialysis whereas the fat-soluble vitamins, A, D, E and K, are not removed. Receiving too much of these vitamins could result in "vitamin toxicity," causing you to feel very sick. Because of all these reasons, you need to take a renal multivitamin.

Replavite Side Effects:

This medication may cause mild nausea or unpleasant taste. Consult your doctor if any of these effects persist or become severe. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist. Replavite Directions:

How much medicine you take and how often you take it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of Replavite (multivitamins) you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Do not stop taking Replavite (multivitamins) without checking with your health care provider. Do not take more medication than prescribed unless advised to do so by your health care provider. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking Replavite (multivitamins). Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your health care provider. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your health care provider. If more than one dose is missed, contact your health care provider or pharmacist.

Replavite Precautions:

Before taking this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or if you have any other allergies. Before taking this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: certain blood disorders (e.g., megaloblastic anemia, vitamin B12 deficiency). If your particular brand of multivitamin also contains folic acid, be sure to tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have a vitamin B12 deficiency (pernicious anemia) before taking it.
