Brevicon (Norethindrone/Ethinyl Estradiol) is used alone or with other medications to prevent pregnancy. It is also useful in managing irregular periods, reducing pain or blood loss during menstruation, reducing the risk of having an ovarian cyst, and treating severe acne in women. Brevicon belongs to a group of medications called oral contraceptives. It contains the combination of two sex hormones: norethindrone (a progestin) and Ethinyl estradiol (an estrogen). Brevicon works in the body by preventing the release of eggs from the ovary and by thickening the mucus produced by the cervix so that sperm is unable to fertilize the egg and if fertilized, the egg is unable to implant itself in the wall of the uterus for pregnancy to occur. Brevicon is a contraceptive used only to prevent pregnancy and cannot prevent against sexually transmitted diseases.
