Fragmin Injection (Dalteparin)

Fragmin Injection Information:

Fragmin (Dalteparin sodium injection) is an anticoagulant in the lowmolecular-weight heparin (LMWH) class that can help prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT)blood clots in the large veins. If left untreated, DVTs can travel to the lungs and cause a potentially fatal pulmonary embolism (PE). Fragmin is also used to prevent ischemic complications associated with acute coronary syndrome (ACS).

FRAGMIN is proven and approved for DVT prophylaxis in:
* Acutely ill medical patients (including cancer)
* Patients undergoing hip replacement surgery
* Patients undergoing abdominal surgery

FRAGMIN is often injected with a prefilled syringe. The syringe is simple to use. It has a fine needle designed to give the least discomfort. It also has a built-in safety device. This device is a guard that slides over the needle after injection to keep you or others from getting stuck.

Fragmin Injection Side Effects:

The most common side effect of FRAGMIN is bleeding. [1] When one takes medicine that slows down blood clotting, it is more likely that you would bleed or bruise easily. Some bleeding events may be very serious. Since FRAGMIN is injected into the skin, the injection site might get sore or red at times. You might even get a bruise ranging from the size of a pinprick to the size of a quarter. If you find a lump at the injection site, don't worry. It is just fluid and will soon be absorbed into your body.

Allergic reactions with FRAGMIN are not common. But, tell your doctor before you start treatment if you have had a reaction to medicines in the past.

Some less common side effects that you may notice when taking FRAGMIN are:

Bleeding of gums
Coughing up blood
Difficulty in breathing or swallowing
Dizziness
Headache
Increased menstrual flow or vaginal bleeding
Nosebleeds
Paralysis
Prolonged bleeding from cuts
Red or dark brown urine
Red or black, tarry stools
Shortness of breath
Unexplained pain, swelling, or discomfort, especially in the chest, abdomen, joints, or muscles
Unusual bruising
Vomiting of blood or coffee ground-like material
Weakness

If you notice any side effects, contact your doctor immediately.

Fragmin Injection Precautions:

FRAGMIN Injection should not be mixed with other injections or infusions unless specific compatibility data are available that support such mixing. FRAGMIN should be used with caution in patients with bleeding diathesis, thrombocytopenia or platelet defects; severe liver or kidney insufficiency, hypertensive or diabetic retinopathy, and recent gastrointestinal bleeding. If a thromboembolic event should occur despite dalteparin prophylaxis, FRAGMIN should be discontinued and appropriate therapy initiated.
