Epivir Information:

Epivir (generic name: Lamivudine) is a drug which is prescribed for the treatment of HIV, which causes the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Lamivudine is not a cure for HIV or AIDS and does not stop the virus from being passed to another person. The Epivir-HBV brand of lamivudine differs from Epivir because it is used to treat chronic hepatitis B. Epivir-HBV should not be used in people who are infected with both hepatitis B and HIV. It works by blocking the ability of the hepatitis B virus to multiply and infect new liver cells. Epivir is an antiviral medication that prevents human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) cells from multiplying in your body. Patients who suffer from AIDs have a weak immune system and this can cause for the patient to become susceptible to many viruses and illnesses. Epivir works by slowing the effects of the HIV/AIDs illnesses.

Epivir Side Effects:

As with any drug, there may be side effects from taking Epivir including cough, sleep problems, strange dreams, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, joint or muscle pain, dizziness, headache, fatigue and changes in shape or location of body fat. More serious side effects may include liver damage, lactic acidosis, pancreatitis, peripheral neuropathy, easy bruising or bleeding, unusual weakness, pale skin, white patches or sores on the mouth, fever, chills and signs of a new infection. If you experience any side effects you must seek immediate medical attention for safety.

Epivir Directions:

You should follow the instructions of the doctor who prescribed it you, and there will also be dosage and information on the pack. Epivir comes in tablet form and can be taken with or without food. Do not crush, break or chew Epivir as this may cause too much of the drug to be released at once which could have undesirable effects. Epivir should be stored at room temperature away from direct light and heat. If the medication is for a child, you may need to break the tablet in half, however your doctor will advise you accordingly.

Epivir Precautions:

If you are allergic to any of the ingredients of Epivir you should not take it, and should inform your doctor. You must consult your doctor if you have any pre-existing medical conditions, including liver or kidney disease, a history of pancreatitis or if you have used a similar medication in the past. You should consult your doctor if you are taking any other medications, as they may interact with Epivir including interferon-alfa, trimethoprim and ribavirin. You should also inform you doctor if you are pregnant, planning to conceive or breastfeeding as Epivir may cause harm to your baby.
The generic alternative is not manufactured by the company that makes the brand product.
