Dostinex (Cabergoline)

Dostinex Information:

Dostinex (generic name: Cabergoline) is a medication for the treatment of hyperprolactinemia (HP). Hyperprolactinemia is a hormone imbalance disorder, in which there is too much prolactin in the blood. Cabergoline belongs to the group of drugs called dopamine receptor antagonists. It works by affecting dopamine, which is a chemical in the brain and in this turn reduces the amount of prolactin being released from the pituitary glands. Prolactin is a peptide hormone in the body. The condition is not common and only occurs in around 1% of the population in the USA. There are many causes of hyperprolactinemia in women including oligomenorrhea, amenorrhea, galactorrhea and infertility. Men can also be diagnosed with hyperprolactinemia and the cause in men is commonly coupled with sexual dysfunction. Symptoms are commonly a decrease in menstruation and well as infertility, loss of libido, breast pain, and in men erectile dysfunction, decrease in libido and infertility. Because men do not menstruate there is often no noticeable symptom for men. Dostinex can decrease the levels of prolactin in the blood and thus improve the symptoms of hyperprolactinemia. Dostinex is also be used in high doses for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease.

Dostinex Side Effects:

As with any drug, there may be side effects from taking Dostinex including nausea, vomiting, dizziness, stomach pain, constipation, headache, drowsiness, numbness, tingling and hot flushes. More serious side effects may include coughing, trouble breathing, feeling light headed and fainting. If you experience any side effects you must seek medical attention immediately for safety.

Dostinex Directions:

You should follow the instructions of the doctor who prescribed Dostinex to you. Directions and dosage information can also be found on the pack or leaflet inside the pack. Dostinex comes in 0.25mg and 0.5mg tablet form. You should swallow Dostinex whole with a glass of water. Do not crush, break or chew the tablets as this may result in too much of the drug being released at once which can cause undesirable effects. Dostinex should be stored at room temperature away from direct sunlight and heat.

Dostinex Precautions:

If you are allergic to any of the ingredients of Dostinex, you should avoid taking it and inform your doctor. You must consult your doctor if you have any pre-existing medical conditions including liver or kidney disease, heart disease, breathing disorders such as asthma or COPD, uncontrolled high blood pressure, high blood pressure caused by pregnancy or if you are allergic to any ergot medications. You must consult your doctor if you are taking any other medications as they may interact with Dostinex, including metoclopramide, ACE inhibitors, beta blockers, calcium channel blockers, diuretics or any other high blood pressure medications. It is important that you inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to conceive or breastfeeding as Dostinex may cause harm to unborn and new born babies.
