Dilantin Information:
Dilantin (Phenytoin) is an
anti-epileptic drug, also called an anticonvulsant. It is used to prevent and control seizures, particularly tonic-clonic (grand mal) and focal seizures. Dilantin works by slowing down impulses in the brain that cause seizures. This in turn blocks repetitive firing of neurons in the brain, primarily in the motor cortex area. By blocking excessive activity of the neurons, it reduces seizures. Symptoms of epilepsy include having at least two unprovoked seizures, which can be characterized by repeated jerking muscle movements, stiffening muscles, and loss of consciousness. Your doctor will decide on the best treatment plan for your condition.

Dilantin Directions:
Take this medication as prescribed by your doctor. For the extended release capsule, swallow whole and do not crush, chew, break, or open it. Chewable tablets are typically taken 2 or 3 times a day. The liquid form of Dilantin should be shaken before measuring the dose with the appropriate device. Follow your doctor’s instructions carefully. Tell your doctor if Dilantin does not seem to work in controlling your seizures. Do not stop taking this medication suddenly, even if you feel fine. Stopping suddenly may increase seizures. Store this medication at room temperature away from moisture, light, and heat. Keep out of sight and reach of children.
Dilantin Precautions:
You should not use Dilantin if you are allergic to phenytoin, if you have ever had liver problems caused by this medication, or if you are currently taking delavirdine (Rescriptor). To make sure Dilantin is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have ever had heart problems, liver disease, diabetes, depression, suicidal thoughts or actions, a vitamin D deficiency, or porphyria. Some people may have thoughts about suicide while taking Dilantin. Your doctor will need to check your progress at regular visits. Seizure control is very important during pregnancy. Do not start or stop taking Dilantin without your doctors’ advice if you are pregnant. Dilantin may harm an unborn baby, but a seizure during pregnancy could harm both mother and baby. Tell your doctor right away if you become pregnant while taking this medication. This medication can make birth control pills less effective. Ask your doctor about using a non-hormonal birth control. Avoid drinking alcohol while you are taking Dilantin. Alcohol use can increase your blood levels of Dilantin and may increase side effects. Daily alcohol use can decrease the levels of Dilantin, which can increase your risk of seizures. Avoid driving or hazardous activity until you know how Dilantin will affect you, as your reactions may be impaired. Tell your doctor about any medications you are taking, including cimetidine, omeprazole, St. John’s wort, antacids, and delavirdine, in order to discuss any possible risks or interactions.
