Vesicare (Solifenacin)

Vesicare Information:

VESIcare (generic name: Solifenacin Succinate) is a medication for the treatment of the symptoms of overactive bladder (OAB). Overactive bladder is the condition when you are unable to control your bladder contractions, which may result in leakages. Solifenacin works by reducing muscle spasms in the bladder and urinary tract (or urethra). Symptoms of an overactive bladder may include needing to urinate too often (urinary frequency), feeling the need to go to the bathroom straight away when feeling the need to urinate (urgency) and leaking or wetting incidents (urinary incontinence) and are caused by frequent muscle contractions which leads to the patient being unable to control them. This is primarily caused by the nerves in the bladder and can be caused by stroke, Parkinson’s disease, dementia and spinal cord injury. Bladder contractions may occur even when the bladder is not full, and so the patient may try to urinate and find that nothing happens. The symptoms are similar to those of cystitis. Overactive bladder can happen at any age, but is more common among older adults, usually over the age of 50.

Vesicare Side Effects:

As with any drug, there may be side effects from taking VESIcare including dry mouth, dry eyes, blurred vision, constipation, nausea, mild stomach pain or upset stomach, dizziness, fatigue, fever, sore throat and body aches. More serious side effects may include severe stomach pain, constipation for more than 3 days, pain or burning when passing urine, urinating less than usual, hot and dry skin and extreme thirst. If you experience any side effects you must seek medical attention immediately for safety.

Vesicare Directions:

You should follow the instructions of the doctor who prescribed VESIcare to you. Directions and dosage information can also be found on the pack or leaflet inside the pack. VESIcare comes in tablet form. You should swallow VESIcare whole with a glass of water. It can be taken with or without food. Do not crush or break tablets. VESIcare should be stored at room temperature away from direct sunlight and heat.

Vesicare Precautions:

If you are allergic to any of the ingredients of VESIcare, you should avoid taking it and inform your doctor. You must consult your doctor if you have any pre-existing medical conditions including liver or kidney disease, stomach disorders causing delayed emptying, narrow angle glaucoma, inability to urinate, blockage in the stomach or intestines and a history of long QT syndrome. You must consult your doctor if you are taking any other medications as they may interact with VESIcare, including arsenic trioxide, chloroquine, droperidol, HIV/AIDs, antibiotics, narcotic medications, psychiatric medications, heart rhythm medication and antidepressants. It is important that you inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to conceive or breastfeeding as VESIcare may cause harm to unborn and new born babies. VESIcare can cause side effects that may impair vision or reactions, you should therefore not do anything that requires you to be alert while taking VESIcare.
