Voltaren (Diclofenac)

Voltaren (generic name: Diclofenac) is a drug which is prescribed for the treatment of pain and inflammation in patients with rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and ankylosing spondylitis. Diclofenax belongs to the group of drugs called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). It works by reducing the substances being released in the body that cause pain and inflammation. Arthritis is a disease of the joints that usually affects those over 50, but can also affect younger people. Arthritis is a common condition that causes pain and inflammation (swelling) of the joints and bones. The main symptoms of arthritis include pain, joint swelling, restricted movement of the joints and warmth or redness of the skin around the joint. Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a type of chronic (long-term) arthritis that affects parts of the spine, including the bones, muscles and ligaments. It is a severe disease and 1 in 10 people who have the condition are at extremely high risk of developing a long-term disability. Voltaren does not cure arthritis; it simply helps to sooth the pain and inflammation symptoms.

Voltaren Side Effects:

As with any drug, there may be side effects from taking Voltaren including upset stomach, mild heartburn, stomach pain, diarrhea, constipation, bloating, gas, dizziness, headache, nervousness, skin itching or rash, blurred vision and ringing in the ears. More serious side effects may include chest pain, weakness, shortness of breath, slurred speech, problems with vision or balance, black or bloody stools, coughing blood, swelling or rapid weight gain, urinating more or less than usual, nausea, itching, loss of appetite, dark urine, jaundice, neck stiffness, chills, increased sensitivity to light, purple spots, convulsions and severe skin reaction. If you experience any side effects you must seek immediate medical attention for safety.

Voltaren Directions:

You should follow the instructions of the doctor who prescribed it you, and there will also be dosage and information on the pack. Voltaren and generic Diclofenac come in tablet, gel, eye drop and suppository form. Swallow the tablet whole with water. Do not chew, crush or break the extended release tablet as this may cause for too much of the drug to be released into the body at once, which can have undesirable effects. Suppositories are for anal use only for patients who cannot take the medication by mouth. Voltaren gel is not to be ingested and for external use only. Voltaren should be stored at room temperature away from direct light and heat.

Voltaren Precautions:

If you are allergic to any of the ingredients of Voltaren you should not take it, and should inform your doctor. You must consult your doctor if you have any pre-existing medical conditions, including liver or kidney disease, history or heart attack or stroke, heart disease, congestive heart failure, high blood pressure, a history of stomach ulcers or bleeding, asthma, polyps in the nose, a bleeding or blood clotting disorder or if you smoke. It is very important to also consult your doctor if you are taking any other medications as they may interact with Voltaren, including blood thinners, cyclosporine, lithium, methotrexate, diuretics, steroids, NSAIDs or any heart or blood pressure medication. You should also inform you doctor if you are pregnant, planning to conceive or breastfeeding as Voltaren may cause harm to your baby. Voltaren can cause suicidal thoughts, and you should consult your doctor immediately if you notice such thoughts.
