Trileptal Information:

Trileptal (generic name: Oxcarbazepine) is a drug which is prescribed for the treatment of seizures. Trileptal belongs to the group of drugs called anticonvulsants, or anti-epileptics. It works by decreasing nerve impulses that cause seizures. Trileptal is used to treat partial seizures in adults and children over the age of 12 years. Seizures are a symptom of various neurological illnesses such as epilepsy. Epilepsy is a brain disorder that causes you to have recurring seizures. Seizures happen when the electrical activity in your brain is suddenly disrupted. This disruption can cause changes in your body movements, awareness, behaviour, emotions or senses. Seizures are also referred to as fits, attacks or convulsions. Not all seizures are caused by epilepsy. Seizures can also be caused by other conditions such as meningitis, diabetes or an overactive thyroid gland. Febrile convulsions are seizures caused by a fever (high temperature) brought on by another illness, such as tonsillitis.

Trileptal Side Effects:

As with any drug, there may be side effects from taking Trileptal including headache, mental slowness, trouble concentrating, problems with speech or balance, dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, vomiting, mild nausea, upset stomach, diarrhea, blurred vision, double vision, tremors, shaking and skin rash. More serious side effects may include increased seizures, swollen glands, chills, fever, body aches, flu symptoms, easy bruising or bleeds, severe tingling, numbness, muscle weakness, urinating less than usual, chest pain, dry cough, wheezing, loss of appetite, dark urine or a severe skin reaction. If you experience any side effects you must seek immediate medical attention for safety.

Trileptal Directions:

You should follow the instructions of the doctor who prescribed it you, and there will also be dosage and information on the pack. Trileptal comes in tablet form. It should be taken twice daily. Swallow the tablet whole with water. Do not chew, crush or break the tablet as this may cause for too much of the drug to be released into the body at once, which can have undesirable effects. Trileptal should be stored at room temperature away from direct light and heat. Do not stop taking Trileptal without consulting your doctor.

Trileptal Precautions:

If you are allergic to any of the ingredients of Trileptal you should not take it, and should inform your doctor. You must consult your doctor if you have any pre-existing medical conditions, including liver or kidney disease. It is very important to also consult your doctor if you are taking any other medications as they may interact with Trileptal, including carbamazepine, cyclosporine, felodipine, Phenobarbital, phenytoin, valproic acid and verapamil. You should also inform you doctor if you are pregnant, planning to conceive or breastfeeding as Trileptal may cause harm to your baby. Trileptal can cause suicidal thoughts, and you should consult your doctor immediately if you notice such thoughts.
