Sporanox (Itraconazole)

Sporanox Information:

Sporanox (generic name: Itraconazole) is a drug which is prescribed for the treatment of fungal infections in the body. It belongs to the group of drugs known as anti-fungals, and works by killing sensitive fungi because it interferes with the formation of the fungal cell membrane. The cell membranes of fungi are vital for their survival, as they keep unwanted substances from entering the cells, and stop the contents of the cells from leaking out. When Sporanox damages the cell walls, the cell is subsequently killed with clears up the fungal infection. Itraconazole is used to fight a variety of fungal infections, including infections of the genitals, mouth, nails, hand, feet and skin. It is also effective in the treatment of fungal infections that affect the entire body, and to prevent fungal infections in people with an underactive immune system, such as those with AIDs or HIV who can become infected easily. Sporanox or generic Itroconazole may also be directed for patients who have eye infections where other medications have been ineffective or where the infection is affecting the patient’s vision.

Sporanox Side Effects:

As with any drug, there may be side effects from taking Sporanox. The most common side effects are diarrhea, constipation, mild stomach pain, mild itching, skin rash, headaches, dizziness, loss of balance, runny nose and other cold like symptoms. More serious side effects may include fever, feeling short of breath even with light or mild exertion, swelling, rapid weight gain, problems with hearing, numbness, tingling feeling, pain or burning during urination, nausea, pain in the stomach, loss of appetite, weakness, dark urine, clay coloured stools, jaundice, severe pain in the stomach or back, nausea and vomiting, and fast heart rate. If you experience any side effects you must seek medical attention immediately for safety.

Sporanox Directions:

You should follow the instructions of the doctor who prescribed Sporanox to you. Directions and dosage information can also be found on the pack or leaflet inside the pack. Sporanox comes in capsule form. You should swallow Sporanox whole with a glass of water after a meal. It is usually prescribed to be taken once a day. Do not break or crush the tablets as this may cause too much of the drug to be released at once, which can have undesirable effects. Sporanox should be stored at room temperature away from direct sunlight and heat.

Sporanox Precautions:

If you are allergic to any of the ingredients of Sporanox, you should avoid taking it and inform your doctor. You must consult your doctor if you have any pre-existing medical conditions including heart disease or any heart disorder, COPD or asthma, liver or kidney disease, cystic fibrosis, or a personal or family history of Long QT Syndrome. You must consult your doctor if you are taking any other medications as they may interact with Sporanox, including cisapride, dofetilide, lovastatin, midazolam, nisoldipine, pimozide, quinidine and medications for ergot. It is important that you inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to conceive or breastfeeding as Sporanox may cause harm to unborn and new born babies.
