Prempro (Conjugated Estrogens + Medroxyprogesterone)

Prempro Information:

Prempro (generic name: conjugated estrogens/ medroxyprogesterone acetate tablet) is an oral hormone medication which is prescribed for the symptoms of the menopause. Symptoms of the menopause include hot flushes, vaginal dryness, vaginal itching, itching and irritation. It is also used to prevent osteoporosis, which is a thinning of the bones. The active ingredients are conjugated estrogens and medroxyprogesterone. Conjugated estrogens are a mixture of estrogen hormones which are found naturally in the body. Estrogen is a female sex hormone which is normally produced by the ovaries, and is necessary for many natural bodily processes. Medroxyprogesterone is another type of female hormone, which is also known as progesterone. This hormone is vital in the regulation of ovulation and menstruation. When a women goes through the menopause the hormone levels drop dramatically, which can cause the symptoms previously mentioned as well as thinning of the bones, known as osteoporosis. This is because estrogen plays a big part in the breakdown and regeneration of bone tissue, so without estrogen in the body naturally the process weakens. The replaced estrogen helps the bone regeneration process to continue as normal.

Prempro Side Effects:

As with any drug, there may be side effects from taking Prempro including mild nausea, vomiting, bloating, stomach pain, breast pain or tenderness, swollen breasts, freckles or darkening of the facial skin, acne, an increase in hair growth, loss of hair on the scalp, changes in body weight, changes in appetite, problems with contact lenses, vaginal itching or discharge, changes in menstruation, headache, nervousness, dizziness and fatigue. More serious side effects may include chest pain, heavy chest, sudden numbness or weakness, sudden headache, confusion, problems with vision or speech, abnormal vaginal bleeding, pain or swelling the lower legs, migraine, pain or swelling of the stomach, jaundice, confusion and breast lumps. If you experience any side effects you must seek medical attention immediately for safety.

Prempro Directions:

You should follow the instructions of the doctor who prescribed Prempro to you. Directions and dosage information can also be found on the pack or leaflet inside the pack. Prempro comes in tablet form in doses of 0.3mg/1.5mg, 0.45 mg/1.5mg, 0.625mg/2.5mg, and 0.625mg/5mg. You should swallow Prempro whole with a glass of water. Prempro should be stored at room temperature away from direct sunlight and heat.

Prempro Precautions:

If you are allergic to any of the ingredients of Prempro, you should avoid taking it and inform your doctor. You must consult your doctor if you have any pre-existing medical conditions including asthma, high blood pressure, heart disease, personal/family history of stroke, liver or kidney disease, endometriosis, epilepsy, migraine, diabetes, high cholesterol, high/low calcium, porphyria, systemic lupus erythematosus, gallbladder disease or any type of breast, uterine or hormone dependent cancer. You must consult your doctor if you are taking any other medications as they may interact with Prempro, including St John’s wort, carbamazepine, Phenobarbital, rifampin, ritonavir, ketoconazole or any antibiotics. Although unlikely after the menopause, it is important that you inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to conceive or breastfeeding as Prempro may cause harm to unborn and new born babies.
