Cafergot Tablets Information:

Cafergot (generic name: Ergotamine and Caffeine) is a drug which is prescribed for the treatment of migraine headaches. The active ingredients in Cafergot are Ergotamine and Caffeine. Ergotamine belongs to a group of drugs called alkaloids, and works by narrowing the blood vessels surrounding the brain. The swelling of the blood vessels in the brain is what causes the immense pain when a migraine occurs. Caffeine is a stimulant that also causes narrowing of the blood vessels. Cafergot helps by reducing other symptoms such as sensitivity to light and sound and nausea. Cafergot is not directed for common headaches, it is only for the treatment of migraines. Cafergot cannot prevent future migraine attacks but it can be taken once a migraine has started and it works in less than an hour for fast relief of the symptoms, which may include severe headache, sensitivity to light and fatigue. The relevant dosage will be prescribed depending on the severity of the individual patient’s migraine attacks. Migraines can be crippling for some patients and can affect work and personal life, but Cafergot can help to live a more normal lifestyle. Cafergot is available as an oral tablet and rectal suppository form.

Cafergot Tablets Side Effects:

As with any drug, there may be side effects from taking Cafergot including dizziness, spinning sensation, weakness, nausea, vomiting and mild itching. More serious side effects may include sudden numbness or weakness, sudden headache, confusion, problems with vision or speech, changes in heart rate, muscle pain, leg weakness, numbness or tingling in the fingers, severe pain in the stomach or lower back, urinating less often, swelling or itching in any part of the body and dangerously high blood pressure. If you experience any side effects you must seek medical attention immediately for safety.

Cafergot Tablets Directions:

You should follow the instructions of the doctor who prescribed Cafergot to you. Directions and dosage information can also be found on the pack or leaflet inside the pack. Cafergot comes in tablet form. You should normally take two tablets with a full glass of water, as soon as you notice signs of a migraine coming on. If the symptoms persist you may take another tablet after 30 minutes have passed. Do not crush, chew or break tablets as this could result in too much of the drug being released at once, which could have undesirable effects. Cafergot should be stored at room temperature away from direct sunlight and heat.

Cafergot Tablets Precautions:

If you are allergic to any of the ingredients of Cafergot, you should avoid taking it and inform your doctor. You must consult your doctor if you have any pre-existing medical conditions including a history of heart disease, coronary artery disease, uncontrolled blood pressure, severe liver or kidney disease or sepsis. You must consult your doctor if you are taking any other medications as they may interact with Cafergot, including conivaptan, diclofenac, imatinib, isoniazid, nefazodone, antibiotics, high blood pressure medication, anti-fungals, heart or blood pressure medications or medication for HIV/AIDs. It is important that you inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to conceive or breastfeeding as Cafergot may cause harm to unborn and new born babies.
