Imdur (Isosorbide Mononitrate)

Imdur Information:

Imdur (generic name: Isosorbide Mononitrate) is a drug which is prescribed for the prevention of angina (chest pain) attacks. Imdur (isosorbide mononitrate) is in a group of drugs called nitrates. It works by dilating (widening) blood vessels, making it easier for blood to flow through them and easier for the heart to pump. Imdur will not treat an angina attack that has already begun and is only directed to prevent future attacks. Angina is a syndrome (a collection of symptoms caused by an underlying health condition) that is caused when the supply of oxygen-rich blood to the heart becomes restricted. Most cases of angina are caused by atherosclerosis, which is a condition where the arteries become hardened and narrower, restricting the supply of blood. It is more common in those aged over 50, smokers and overweight patients.

Imdur Side Effects:

As with any drug, there may be side effects from taking Imdur including headache, mild dizziness, warmth or redness of the skin, nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, hot flushes and dry mouth. More serious side effects may include fast or pounding heartbeat, feeling faint, trouble breathing, blue-colored skin, fatigue and worsening angina pain. If you experience any side effects you must seek immediate medical attention for safety. Not to be used in: Allergy to nitrates Bleeding in the brain (cerebral haemorrhage) Blood in the sac surrounding the heart which prevents the heart beating properly (cardiac tamponade) Closed angle glaucoma Failure of the blood circulatory system (circulatory collapse) Failure of the heart to maintain adequate circulation of blood (cardiogenic shock) Head injury Heart disease in which the muscle of the heart grows abnormally (hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy) Inflammation of the sac surrounding the heart which stops the heart from beating properly (constrictive pericarditis) Low volume of circulating blood (hypovolaemia) Narrowing of one of the valves in the heart (mitral valve stenosis) Narrowing of the main artery coming from the heart (aortic stenosis) Severe anaemia Very low blood pressure (severe hypotension) Usually one tablet (60mg) once daily in the morning. To reduce the possibility of headaches you may initially be given half a tablet (30mg) once daily for the first 2-4 days. The dose may be increased to two tablets (120mg) once daily in the morning.

Imdur Directions:

You should follow the instructions of the doctor who prescribed it you, and there will also be dosage and information on the pack. Imdur comes in tablet form and should be with water. Do not crush, break or chew the tablets as this may cause too much of the drug to be released at once, which may have undesirable effects. Imdur should be stored at room temperature away from direct light and heat. Do not stop taking Imdur without consulting your doctor. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose to ensure that you get the best results.

Imdur Precautions:

If you are allergic to any of the ingredients of Imdur you should not take it, and should inform your doctor. You must consult your doctor if you have any pre-existing medical conditions, including liver or kidney disease, congestive heart failure and low blood pressure. You should consult your doctor if you are taking any other medications, as they may interact with Imdur including blood pressure medications, dihydroergotamine, erectile dysfunction medications, beta blockers and any heart medications. You should also inform you doctor if you are pregnant, planning to conceive or breastfeeding as Imdur may cause harm to your baby.
