Hyzaar (generic name: Losartan Potassium – Hydrochlorothiazide tablets, Losartan/HCTZ) is an approved medication for the treatment of high blood pressure, also known as hypertension. Losartan belongs to the group of drugs called angiotensin II receptor antagonists. In patients with high blood pressure (hypertension), the blood vessels become restricted which increases blood pressure. This puts a strain on the heart by increasing its need for oxygen, which can be fatal and can lead to heart disease. Losartan keeps the blood vessels from narrowing. Hydrochlorothiazide is a diuretic which helps to stop the body from absorbing too much salt, which is another known cause of high blood pressure. Hyzaar Side Effects:
As with any drug, there may be side effects from taking Hyzaar including stomach pain, back pain, dizziness, fatigue, skin rash, runny or stuffy nose, sore throat and dry cough. More serious side effects may include feeling light headed, fainting, swelling, rapid weight gain, changes in heartbeat, pale skin, easy bruising or bleeding, urinating less, jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), dry mouth, increased thirst restlessness, confusion and seizures. It is important that you inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to conceive or breastfeeding as Hyzaar may cause harm to unborn and new born babies. Do not drink alcohol as this may increase the side effects of Hyzaar. Hyzaar can interfere with the results of thyroid tests.
