Arthrotec Information:

Arthrotec (generic name: Diclofenac and Misoprostol) is a drug which is prescribed for the treatment of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis in people at high risk of developing stomach or intestinal ulcers. Arthritis is a degenerative joint disease, and it is identified by three key characteristics: mild inflammation of the tissues in and around the joints; damage to cartilage, which is the strong smooth surface that lines the bones and allows the joints to move; and bone growths that develop around the edge of the joints. The two active ingredients in Arthrotec work together that helps patients who suffer from symptoms relating to arthritis. Diclofenac is an anti-inflammatory drug, and it works by decreasing the amount of inflammation around the joints, which in turn helps to relieve pain. Misoprostol reduces stomach acid and replaces protective substances in the stomach that are reduced by NSAIDs. This is particularly important in patients who have arthritis as they often develop gastrointestinal ulcers.

Arthrotec Side Effects:

As with any drug, there may be side effects from taking Arthrotec including mild stomach pain, nauseas, diarrhea, bloating, gas, dizziness, drowsiness, headache, blurred vision, ringing in the ears and unusual vaginal bleeding. More serious side effects may include chest pain, weakness, shortness of breath, slurred speech, problems with vision or balance, black or bloody stools, coughing up blood, vomit that looks like coffee grounds, swelling, rapid weight gain, urinating less than usual, increased blood pressure, severe nausea, blistering or peeling of the skin, bruising, severe tingling, numbness, purple spots on the skin, neck stiffness, chills and sensitivity to light. If you experience any side effects you must seek medical attention immediately for safety.

Arthrotec Directions:

You should follow the instructions of the doctor who prescribed Arthrotec to you. Directions and dosage information can also be found on the pack or leaflet inside the pack. Arthrotec comes in tablet form. Do not crush, break or chew tablets as this may result in too much of the drug being released at once, which can have undesirable effects. Arthrotec should be stored at room temperature away from direct sunlight and heat.

Arthrotec Precautions:

If you are allergic to any of the ingredients of Arthrotec, you should avoid taking it and inform your doctor. You must consult your doctor if you have any pre-existing medical conditions including history of heart attack, history of stroke or blood clots, a history of stomach ulcers, liver or kidney disease, asthma, polyps in the nose, porphyria, a blood clotting disorder, if you smoke, or if you have more than three alcoholic drinks per day. You must consult your doctor if you are taking any other medications as they may interact with Arthrotec, including blood thinners, cyclosporine, digoxin, diuretics, insulin or diabetic medications, lithium, methotrexate, Phenobarbital, aspiring or other NSAIDs and ACE inhibitors. It is important that you inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to conceive or breastfeeding as Arthrotec may cause harm to unborn and new born babies.
